How To Choose Window Treatments For Your Home

How To Assess Your Options With Blinds

When it comes to building or renovating, there are so many choices to make along the way that the process can become a little overwhelming. Putting the finishing touch on windows is one area that can be simplified by considering the role they play in your space.

Window treatments create style, comfort and energy efficiency in your home. They’re also an investment that can add value to your property. The key to making choices that make you happy, is by prioritizing what’s important to you.

Budget

Budget is a big consideration for most of us, so it’s best to start thinking about it early. There’s no point having your heart set on pure linen sheer curtains when your budget doesn't stretch that far. Blinds are often one of the last things that get considered when there’s little or nothing left in the budget - so we recommend planning for them early. Obtain some quotes when you have floor plans or window schedules. Good window treatment companies are happy to provide an indicative quote from the plan, and can also offer advice on what will or won’t work on your windows.

What is it that you actually need your blinds or window coverings to do? It pays to start thinking early about what you want to achieve - is it a certain ‘look’? Are they to block out light but not the view? Do you want to be able to control all of your blinds from your mobile phone?

Colour

It’s always safest to go neutral with blinds - unless you are one of those people who are very confident with colour. Sticking with neutral blinds means they won’t detract from your view or go out of fashion quickly.

Light Control

Light control in bedrooms is important. If you prefer a dark room to sleep or have young children that you don't want waking up at the crack of dawn, then go for a good quality blackout fabric. If you can’t tolerate even the smallest amount of light, then it would probably be better to go with fully lined curtains and a pelmet, which also helps with insulation.

Other rooms where controlling the light is important are TV or theatre rooms and areas where you may use a computer.

Privacy

There are many blinds that will provide privacy, from sheers and sunscreen roller blinds to venetians and shutters - giving you privacy but still allowing you to see out and allow the natural light to come in.

Heat Control

Windows have a huge impact on both heat loss and heat gain in your home. In Winter, heat is lost through uncovered glass, so installing close fitting blinds or curtains will help you save on your heating bills - as long as you remember to close them. Covering your blinds with a pelmet will substantially increase your insulation benefits by preventing what’s known as hot air draw down.

If keeping your home cooler in summer is a priority, consider external awnings - preventing the sun from actually hitting the glass is the most effective way to stop heat gain.

Aesthetics

Finally, choosing blinds or curtains that suit your style and taste is important - don't be persuaded to buy something you’re not comfortable living with. Consider how your window furnishings will look from the outside, especially for windows that face the street. You only have to pay attention when driving around to see that this is frequently overlooked, affecting the street appeal of many homes - and ultimately affecting their value.
